UNITE Awards Celebrate Cutting-Edge Forest Research and Societal Impact

Reppu ja kunniakirja

The annual UNITE Awards were presented on 22 April in Joensuu in connection with the UNITE flagship’s annual seminar. The awards recognize outstanding research and scientific contributions across four categories. This year’s awards highlighted transformative forest research, influential visions for the wood supply chain, and exemplary efforts in advancing scientific discussion and communication.

🏆 UNITE Science Award: Tuomas Yrttimaa (UEF)

The UNITE Science Award was presented to Tuomas Yrttimaa (University of Eastern Finland) for his research on identifying individual trees based on stem profiles and branching patterns—so-called architectural characteristics—assumed to be unique to each tree. Using terrestrial laser scanning data, these characteristics can be mapped in real forest environments, enabling precise, non-destructive, tree-level measurements.

Yrttimaa’s work innovatively combines theoretical approaches to tree identification with remote sensing–based measurement techniques. The research is scientifically rigorous and provides novel insights for the international research community. It also opens promising avenues for practical applications, such as wood tracking and traceability, underscoring the importance of bold and ambitious scientific inquiry in advancing remote sensing technologies.

🏆 UNITE Impact Award: Multidisciplinary Research Team

The UNITE Impact Award was granted to a multidisciplinary research team consisting of: Kalle Kärhä (UEF), Harri Kaartinen (Finnish Geospatial Research Institute), Joni Backas (Ponsse), Heikki Hyyti (FGI), Antero Kukko (FGI), and Kari Väätäinen (Natural Resources Institute Finland).

The award recognizes exceptional contributions to business and society. Finnish forest research is widely acknowledged as a global frontrunner, and the awarded study exemplifies this leadership. Its impact extends beyond Finland to the Nordic countries, Europe, and the international research community. The work stands out for its strong interdisciplinary approach and for offering a clear, forward-looking vision at a time of increasing economic and geopolitical uncertainty. As stated in the awarded publication: “Implementation of the Roadmap 2035 Vision requires coordinated actions from multiple stakeholders across the wood supply value chain”, this comprehensive and future-oriented perspective was recognized as both timely and highly impactful.

🏆 ACME Award: Jari Vauhkonen (UEF)

The ACME Award (Acquisition + Creation + Management + Engagement) was awarded to Jari Vauhkonen (UEF) for his contributions to enhancing the quality of scientific discussion.

Vauhkonen has authored peer-reviewed commentaries on already published research articles, demonstrating through re-analysis that, in several cases, the original conclusions are questionable or even incorrect. His work promotes critical thinking and transparency, strengthening the foundations of scientific debate.

🏆 Communication Award: Ilkka Leinonen (Natural Resources Institute Finland)

The fourth award, the Communication Award, was presented to Ilkka Leinonen (Natural Resources Institute Finland). Leinonen was recognized for his active and influential role in science communication, particularly through social media, blog posts, and a recently published report chapter addressing carbon sinks, forest policies, and technical carbon sink solutions.

The UNITE community nominated several high-quality candidates for the 2025 awards, reflecting both the excellence and the broad scope of research conducted within the flagship. The winners of the Science and Impact Awards were selected by stakeholder representatives, while the remaining awards were decided by members of the flagship’s leadership and communication team.
